Includes Dedication and Preface. Charlotte Smith's first book, published with the help of William Hayley in order to earn some money and support her husband, who had been imprisioned for debt, and their nine children. Elegiac Sonnets was a success, and was reprinted and expanded at least a dozen times. Although remembered mainly for her novels, Charlotte Smith considered herself primarily a poet. |
